NTBackup hangs writing to CD-RW

Anyone have any ideas on this one...

Windows XP Professional SP1
CD-RW drive TEAC CD-W224E

I'm running Backup Utility (5.1.2600.0) to backup data
files to the CD-RW. The backup process hangs every
time. Just figured out though, if I turn the volume
shadow copy off, it seems to work ok. Would rather use
the shadow copy though.

Any insights appreciated...

Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315255 buy a 3rd party program. I use TrueImage from www.acronis.com backs up directly to CD or DVD.

Well now that's interesting. I read the article... On my win2k machine,
when I first tried to do this, the NTBackup wouldn't recognize the CDRW at
all, and it didn't take long to figure out that it wasn't an option at all.
When I first tried it on the winXP machine, the backup utility found the
CDRW as an available removable storage media, so I just assumed it would
work. Now that it seems to work (for reasons unknown) with the shadow copy
option disabled, makes me wonder if this is a fluke and I shouldn't rely on
its continuing to work... The fact is that the (XP) system does seem to
recognize the CDRW as a RSM, despite what the MS article suggests...

any thoughts??
Thanks for the info!

Well, with shadow copying off files in use would not be copied. Therefore it wouldn't be much of a backup.

The easiest way to make it work, as it should, is to install a 2nd HDD to write the .bkf file to.

I used ntbackup (and restored from it) without mishap. It does copy everything from the system drive and does restore it. I have, however, purchased an imaging program which will write directly to CD or DVD. I do prefer though to write to another HDD, it is faster and quicker to restore from the HDD. Check out TrueImage from www.acronis.com HTH.
