NTBackup and DVD-RW drive

David

I don't know if this is the most relevant newsgroup for my question but I'll
try here first.

I want to use ntbackup in WindowsXP to back up to a DVD-RW. I know that I
cannot use the DVD-RW as a managed media device because ntbackup simply will
not do this. So, I'll tell ntbackup to write it's backup to a file which
I'll place on the DVD-RW. In this case, it's my understanding that I'll
need software like DirectCD (Roxio) or InCD (Nero) for packet writing in
order to be able to use the DVD-RW drive as if it were like a floppy drive.

If I'm on the right track then all I need to know is, which software - Roxio
or Nero or something else (freeware?) - is most reliable.

If I'm not on the right track then please redirect me.

Thanks very much for any advice here.

If you are going to pay for nero or roxio, why not buy a real backup program
like Acronis true image or norton ghost. Both will copy to a DVD for you. I
prefer Acronis myself.

Bud,

Thanks. Do Ghost and Acronis both provide file-level restore? Isn't
Acronis expensive (like several hundred dollars)?

Yes, they do. Works great. You can also very easily mount the image and
pick off the files you need.

No. The retail version of Home is around US$49, the Workstation version
about US$79.

The *server* versions start around US$699.

Definitely worthwhile.

the Home version, at least, makes images that are sized for a DVD, and
automatically creates a new file when that size is reached.
