Problems with a USB connected DVD RW drive

Greetings,

I have an Asus laptop with a built in CD RW and DVD ROM drive. So to
write DVDs, I also have an NEC DVD RW drive connected via a USB2
external enclosure.

All is fine with Windows. It recognizes the DVD RW, assigns a drive
letter etc. I can see it, smell it and touch it in My Computer. I can
read DVDs and CDs from it. I can format and write CD RWs. I can write
CDs. The problem is I can't format and write DVD RWs. I can't write DVDs.

I use a fully up to date Nero 6 Ultra Suite for all writing. My laptop
has a current Windows XP SP2 with all patches.

When I try to write to the DVD, Nero hangs because Windows loses the DVD
drive. It disappears from My Computer. Windows freezes and eventually I
have to re-boot.

The DVD RW works fine in my desktop as a IDE attached drive. As with the
laptop, it doesn't work if the DVD RW is USB connected.

I've created quite a few DVD "coasters" so any help will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks.

Go to the NEC website and try to find updates to the drivers or firmware for
your burner.
