2000 to XP Pro Upgrade won't load from CD

I started have strange problems with my CD/DVD-ROM and CD/DVD-RW drives on my
WIN2000 system. Only the RW works, but it's sporatic. Rarely (but
occaisionally) can read audio CDs. Usually (but not always) can read data
discs. The functionality can come & go without a reboot. Not sure what
started it but suspicious of 1) ROM drive is dead and messed up the RW when
it died (I have reinstalled the drivers with no change and applied all
Microsoft updates) and/or 2) iTunes intefered. (I have since COMPLETELY
uninstalled iTunes and still have the problem -- Apple says it's my OS).

So.....
I decided it was an OS problem and take this opportunity to upgrade to XP.
I bought PRO.
RW drive can't see/read the disc. It can read the Windows2000 disc. I have
tried everything. Help will be MOST APPRECIATED!

Likely hardware issues - you suspected it yourself.
Spend $40 and insert a new drive.

Many things do not just 'die'.
None of your descriptions ever said it could *always* read any single type.
You stated a lot of 'occassionally' and 'not always' in there.

It's like anything else - it's defective - slightly off balance but not
completely gone. Bi-polar, on its last legs, etc. What do you have to
lose...? Go get yourself a $40 16x or faster DVD+/-RW drive and install it.
You gain funtionality and utility.
