Setup is Starting Windows and then locks up

Hi,

When I try to instal Windows XP Pro with SP2 from either CD or hard disk,
the files get set up, and then on reboot, the install goes through loading
the drivers and then locks up at "Setup is Starting Windows." Any ideas?
My system details is below. I already have an OS installed. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.

Please verify that you have the most recent BIOS from the maker of your
motherboard...I have had the same situation with other types of motherboards
that were fixed with the BIOS updates. Was it hanging on the BLUE Setup
screen? I am also wondering if you have the AOpen AX4BS Pro i845 motherboard.

I just double-checked and I do. I have the Soyo SY-P4IS2 board with the
latest BIOS and Intel updates. It does have the Intel 845 chipset, 82845
memory controller and 82801BA (ICH2) I/O controller.

I've had no problems installing other OS's like Win2000 Adv Server or
Windows 2003 Adv Server. It's just XP that does this. I do notice that
after it gets to the "...Starting Windows," the harddrive light flickers
about 5-10 seconds after and then my USB devices get reset and then nothing
happens after that.

Did you try a different video card? If using AGP remove it and try a PCI
video card . What SCSI Controller are you using? most recent BIOS on that?

I don't have another video card to try. The card in the system is an AGP
card. The scsi controller is an adaptec 2930CU with the latest bios per
adaptec's web site. So at this point, I'm not really sure what to do.
Since I can install directly from the hard drive, I'm tempted to just remove
the scsi controller to see if it's the cause.

I appreciate your help. What a pain, eh?

You might want to disconnect the USB storage devices that are
attached to your computer and try the installation again. After
the installation is complete, you can then install them from
within Windows. Also, you'll be asked at the beginning of the
installation to provide hit the F6 key and provide the drivers
for your SCSI devices.

You should always detach as many devices as possible before doing a clean
install, I learned this doing clean installs with Win 3x,95, the less cards
that I had in the system the better the install went (anyone rememeber
that!)...though this has been fixed with the newer releases it still seems to
haunt us once in a while.

I know the feeling. I was able to install windows xp on this machine. I
thought about what my configuration was before compared to now.

Before:
C/D partitions on a 12Gig 5400 rpm drive
E drive on a 10 Gig 5400 rpm drive
F drive on an 80 Gig 7200 rpm drive

Now:
C/D partitions on the 80 Gig 7200 rpm drive
E drive on the 12 Gig 5400 rpm drive
F drive on a new 110 Gig 7200 rpm drive

I'm thinking it may be the drive configuration for whatever reason. All
drives in NTFS format.

I appreciate the time you spent on this. Thank you.

Yeah, I did the disconnect USB thing and nothing. Also, my scsi card driver
is supposed to be available in Windows XP. I got this directly from
adaptec's site. I have the 2930CU card.

I appreciate the new direction to go in.

You might want to disconnect the USB storage devices that are
attached to your computer and try the installation again. After
the installation is complete, you can then install them from
within Windows. Also, you'll be asked at the beginning of the
installation to provide hit the F6 key and provide the drivers
for your SCSI devices.

Hi,

When I try to instal Windows XP Pro with SP2 from either CD or
hard disk,
the files get set up, and then on reboot, the install goes
through loading
the drivers and then locks up at "Setup is Starting Windows."
Any ideas?
My system details is below. I already have an OS installed.
Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.

I wanted to let you know that I found the problem. No real solution as of
yet. I remembered that I also put in a PCI USB/IEEE1394 card in the PC
because the onboard USB ports were 1.1 and I wanted the 2.0 versions.

When I removed this card, I was able to install the OS. However, after the
OS came up and I configured it, I plugged the card back in. After the
computer boots it eventually locks up. About a couple minutes after getting
to the log in screen. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I guess I'll
need to inform Microsoft.

Arthur,

Glad to hear you're making progress. As far at the card goes, did
you check the manufacturer's web site for updated drivers? Your
current drivers might not be compatible with SP2. If you find an
update then you might want to start your computer in Safe Mode,
update the drivers and see what happens when you boot normally.
Other than that the only thing I can suggest is to try a
different card from a different manufacturer.

Good luck
