XP Won't shut down

I need a little help with my desk top. It won't shut down. There is at
least one or 2 files that seem to hang on shut down that won't let it
complete what it is supposed to do. I read in a help book at the book store
that with XP you can hit the start/stop switch and it will complete the shut
down that way. I have done that a few times after a half hour, and it is
still going. I don't want to do a complete system reload as this will ruin
all the stuff I have already stored on the HD. The system is Compaq, with
1gig ram. If that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance.......

TaurArian,

Thanks for the links, I may have in-advertently found the problem. Not sure
at this point however it is shutting down the way it used to. I removed
Nortons firewall, this program has been sending notices to MS for about a
month, then I started having shutdown problems. Last night I gave up, and
removed Nortons, and it started working proplerly again. I have been having
a problem with my printer, and have tried to reload the software/printer a
couple of times, keep getting the same error when I try to use the Image Zone
software to print photos with. I downloaded the express version of the
software and it works, however it doesn't work as well as the zone version.
I have a message in to HP on this one, so don't know what will happen.
