XP won't auto detect Sidewinder JS

I can't get an old IBM Pentium M T42 laptop to auto detect a MS Sidewinder
Precision Pro joystick (USB). The laptop is running Win XP pro SP3 with
current updates. All my other computers are running Win XP have auto
detected this joystick without any problems. I sure would appreciate any
suggestions. Thanks.

The joystick is plugged into a USB port on the laptop but no joystick is
listed in "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager. When I try
to "Add" the MS SideWinder in Game Controllers, I get the following message:
Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please
consult the Device Manager. This is a laptop and does not have a "Gameport"
but this is a USB joystick so you would think XP would be able to auto detect
it.

I don't know how to fix your problem, but I do see "Sidewinder" mentioned
in C:\Windows\INF\input.inf

USB\VID_045E&PID_0008.DeviceDesc="Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro (USB)"

You could use a copy of UVCView, and check that a device with that VID
and PID is showing up. The program is originally from Microsoft, but is
no longer offered for download.

The program interface looks similar to this.

Never mind. The joystick was broken. I tried it with another Sidewinder and
it auto detected. Sorry
