XP/Win2k Network problem

G

Guest

Chuck,
I'm finally done with all your instructions. The only thing I couldn't do
was Windows Update, as the website says it's blocked due to network
restrictions on my computer. This only happens with the win2k machine, not
the xp. probably because the win2k is built by my office and has restrictions
i can't change. I finally did manage to change the restrictanonymous to 0.
Lastly, I ran browstat and both see only one running, which is the XP.
Although on the win2k it gives me in addition an error 'could not open key
in registry, error = 5. unable to determine build of brower master: 5'
After all this, I still can't see the win2k on the network though.

I also ran hijackthis again and it looks like this now, after deleting the
few items you suggested. Btw, I uninstalled plaxo, but the 016-dpf is still
there:

Sascha,

OK, if you finally managed to change RA, then we've made progress. That was a
nice assortment of bad stuff wasn't it?

I dunno about Windows Update, we might better look at that one later. You have
to run Windows Update regularly, there were some critical updates issues just
last week.

Right now, let's deal with the "error = 5", which is access denied. Is the XP
computer Windows XP Home, or Pro with Simple File Sharing? SFS will give you
access denied here, cause browstat is querying the registry, and the Guest
account (which is what is used to authenticate network access with SFS) has no
access to the registry.

Let's take a look at "ipconfig /all" and "browstat status" from both computers.
That should give us some possibilities.

P.S. I can't access the workgroup when the XP is off. Presumably that's
because the xp is the server as it's the one running the browser. so i turned
off the xp completely and turned on the browser on the win2k just to see what
happens. but i still can't see the win2k in the workgroup.

Sascha,

Is the XP computer running XP Home, or XP Pro? If XP Pro, is Simple File
Sharing enabled?

One of the problems with the whole browser concept is that it's not reliable in
small groups. If you're going to disconnect or shut off the computer that
you've designated as the master browser (ie the one computer running the browser
service), then yes, you'll not be able to see the other computers.

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>
<http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm>
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

For browsing to work (for each computer to be listed by a browser), each
computer must have a restrictanonymous value of "0".

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember Win2K is NT V5.0, and WinXP
is NT V5.1.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

OK, Sascha,

Let's diagnose the problem.

Provide browstat information for each computer.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\browstat.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.

computer must have a restrictanonymous value of "0".

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember Win2K is NT V5.0, and WinXP
is NT V5.1.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.
hi chuck,
it's xp pro. sps is enabled (in the folder options/view tab) and
restrictanonymous is set to 0.

Sascha,

DOHH. Two posts on one day, and I missed the first one. OK, let's work from
there.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Hi Sascha,

OK, looking at the browstats, comprehensive diagnoses, and ipconfigs for both
the laptop and workstation, there are simply 2 discrepancies.
1) The browser on the workstation can't enumerate the laptop.
2) The workstation can't net view the laptop.

The "error = 5" on the laptop browstat is normal. The workstation is running XP
Pro with SFS, which means network access is by the Guest account. Browstat
requires administrative access to open the registry and retrieve the browser
master build information, but the Guest account has no administrative access.

I'm not sure about the browser on the workstation not enumerating (seeing) the
laptop at all. Nor the "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied." when
accessing the laptop from the workstation.

Issues 1 and 2 above normally have different causes. The ability for the
browser to enumerate another computer is by anonymous access
(restrictanonymous). The ability to net view another computer is by
authenticated access (Guest or non-Guest).

You are sure that restrictanonymous on the laptop is set to "0" still?

How is the Guest account enabled on the laptop? Windows 2000 uses either a
non-Guest account (if enabled and in use on both the Windows 2000 server, and on
the client), or the Guest account (if enabled).

Are you using a common, non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank password,
on both computers? If not, enable Guest, with Start - Run - "cmd", then type
"net user guest /active:yes" in the command window, on both computers. Then set
an identical non-blank password, with Start - Run - "control userpasswords2";
select Guest, click Reset Password, and enter a new password, on both computers.

If that doesn't help, then we have to look for a firewall on the laptop.
Actually, a firewall makes more sense, because it's the only single cause for
issues 1 and 2 above.

Can you maybe involve the folks at work, who set the laptop up, if it gets to
this point?

hi chuck,

just wanted to let you know that the firewall is probably the issue and
since it's a work install there's nothing i can do. sorry for not coming back
to you earlier. i will install win98 at some point as it's a low spec laptop,
and then try again.

thank you for all the help and effort. i am very satisfied with your service
and i will gladly give you a very positive feedback if there's a place where
i can do that. keep up the good work! you're a great help to the user
community.

best regards

Sascha,

Thanks for the update, and the encouragement - I had a feeling the firewall was
at least part of the problem. I put a guest book on my website over the
weekend.
