XP - Win2K network problem

C

Colin

I have a problem with an XP machine and a Win2K machine on a LAN .

They can ping each other by IP address OK and they can each access the
internet OK.

XP can ping Win2K by computer name, but Win2K can not ping XP by name.

They can open each other's shares if opened by IP address : "RUN"
\\192.168.0.100\myshare

XP can open Win2K's shares by name : "RUN" \\Win2KName\myshare but Win2K
can not open XP this way (The network path was not found)

XP can not see Win2K in my network places

Win2K can see XP's workgroup, but can not open it (Workgroup is not
accessible - The network path was not found)

DHCP node type is mixed on both machines

I have run out of ideas, can anyone suggest how to get these machines to see
each other?

Many thanks for any help

Brian

Brian,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

One possibility is the NetBT setting. It needs to be consistent.

Look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Thanks for your replies. I have dug a litle deeper..

The XP machine had NetBios over TCP/IP set to default. I have set it to
enabled but it has not made any difference.

Browstat reveals that each computer thinks that it is the default browser. I
think this is significant! But what to do next?

Many thanks again for your help

Brian,

If both computers see themselves as the master browser, this is indeed
significant. They are on the same workgroup? Or not? The best solution, if
it's just 2 computers on the LAN, is to Stop and Disable the browser service on
either one. Then reboot both.

Chuck,

Thanks for that. Actually no, they are on different workgroups, and
eventually there would be multiple XPs on the same workgroup and Win2K with
its own workgroup.

Actually I have had this setup working before. The XP (laptops) are on loan.
They worked in this configuation before but since I have borrowed them again
I put one on the network and have the problem as described. I don't know
what configuration changes may have taken place since I last used them, (and
little chance of finding out!)

I am a bit out of my depth here. I understand TCP/IP configuration, DNS,
DHCP but not windows browsers. Previously it has just worked without these
mysteries! Your help is much appreciated.

OK, Colin (then who is Brian),

If you have 2 computers in the same workgroup, then it's best to disable the
browser on one, and let the other serve as master browser for both. If you must
have 2 (or more) computers in different workgroups, you'll need at least 1
computer in each workgroup running the browser. Each workgroup needs a master
browser. The master browsers in each workgroup then communicate among
themselves, and pass their browse lists around.

So make sure that the browser is running on both computers. And wait an hour or
so, for them to synchronise. If you don't start seeing each in the other's My
Network Places, then investigate.

Look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config
workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this article,
and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Ask questions whenever I tell you something that you don't understand. Be
patient with me. And read the articles.

Chuck,

Many thanks again for your detailed reply.

I am a bit embarrassed to tell you that having re-booted both PCs, the
wireless router connecting the XP laptop, and myself, the problem has
resolved itself.

The only thing I have changed on the XP machine was adding a registry entry
to set the DHCP node type to MIXED, (previously unknown), although this
didn't make any difference, (this was before my original post).

I am wondering if the wireless router could possibly be the culprit, as it
is the only thing I hadn't rebooted during this problem, although I don't
see how it would enable the PC to have internet access but not the abililty
to browse a local PC.

I have added a second XP laptop which worked immediately as soon as I
configured the wireless settings.

So for now everything is OK. I shall certainly bookmark your excellent
articles for future refernce.

Thanks again,

Brian.

Brian,

Frequently, browser problems do resolve themselves when enough reboots are done.
If the problem comes up again, you know how to start next time.
