whats the best solution....take back the xp upgrade and

The XP Upgrade should allow you to put your Win98 CD in the drive to
prove existence of a qualifying operating system.

Hi, Donny.

Please don't reinstall Win98. Just have that CD-ROM handy and, when WinXP
Setup asks to see it, put it into the drive momentarily and Setup will be
happy to continue.

Run the CD from the existing system. Enter Install, change Upgrade to
New Install, then when it asks you to confirm where, you can hit ESC and
get the chance to select the current partition, delete it, and create
a new RAW one, going on to format it as part of the setup

Then, when it asks where the qualifying product is, show it the Win98 CD
in the drive for a moment. Unless that is a 'restore' or 'recovery' CD.
If it is, you will have to boot a Win98 startup floppy, and use FDISK to
delete the present partition (non-DOS one if NTFS) and make a new DOS
primary; reboot and Format C:, install Win98 and run the upgrade from it
(in the same way - by the time it gets to the format stage it will have
checked eligibility)
