xp to win2000 prblem

I am networking two laptops, one with xp-home and the other
with win2000 professional. The problem is that I can't get
the xp machine to show up in the win2000 machine's network
places.

The reverse works fine, the win2000 machine shows up in the
xp's network places. Also, the two machines share an
internet connection without problems, with the xp machine
as host.

net view from both machines works fine, each showing the
resources available on the other.

I can ping the xp machine from the win2000 machine, but the
reverse doesn't work. A ping from the xp machine to the
win2000 machine times out.

File and print sharing are enabled.

Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled

Users are the same on both machines (except when I try to
establish an account named Administrator on the xp amchine,
it tells me it already exists, and to choose another name,
even though it doesn't show on the list of accounts.)

Any thoughts?

Doug,
On the surface it looks like you have covered lots of the
possibilities. The fact that can't ping both ways is
troublesome. I wonder if you have a firewall active that
is preventing it? The ability to ping is fundamental to
any network.

Another thing you said that bothers me is about the
administrator on XP. Are you logging on both machines
with a username and password that is common to both? You
can logon the XP administrator account by pressing Cntrl-
Alt-Del twice at the welcome screen. After you logon the
administrator account you can press Cntrl-Alt-Del again to
set the administrator password.

Something else that might help you is Microsoft Knowledge
Base article number 258717. This fairly comprehensive of
the basics for peer to peer networking. It is directed to
2000/98/95 but the basics work for XP as well.

I have a Trend Micro Internet Security program firewall on
the w2k machine that was giving me problems until I
configured it for Home Network. That was when the w2k
machine became visible on the xp machine. I have disabled
the firewall in the properties of the LAN connection. The
xp machine has Norton Anti-virus, but does not have the
firewall package installed. Are there any other possible
firewalls, and if so, how do I go about looking for them?

Yes, I have logged on to both machines with the same user
name/password with no success.

I have already worked through Microsoft Knowledge Base
article number 258717. It did not prove helpful.

I will try setting up the administrator account later, when
my wife gets off the machine. She is not being very
tolerant of my troubleshooting efforts here.

XP has a build-in firewall option. See the 'Tab' on the properties of your
local network adaptor.

I have disabled the firewall in the "Advanced Tab" of the
Local Area Network Properties window. I believe this is
the "Tab" you are referring to. I could find no other.

I finally got my wife off the xp long enough to try sign in
as administrator (ctl-alt-del twice at login screen). When
I tried to sign in as "administrator" (no password, one was
never established) I got the following

"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction."

doug,
Based on everything you have said I would start looking at
what services/securiy are enabled and disabled. My home
network has a mix of XP/Wk2000/98 and on Friday I
dicovered the 98 machines could not see the Wk2 machine,
in fact, the 98 machines could not browse at all on the
workgroup network. Over the last few months I had been
tweaking the services/security/policy settings settings on
the w2k box. I started rolling it all back and the
network finally came back alive. The problem is I don't
know which setting it was. I am going have to reapply the
settings one at a time to find which one it was. Another
thing I thought of, do you take the laptop to your office
and plug it into a microsoft domain? This can have an
impact on your ability to bring it back to workgroup
networking. In your replys you did not say anymore about
pinging both directions. Until you can ping both ways
your network will not work. You might concentrate on
things that prevent pinging. Is your network wired or
wireless? If wired, are the cables factory or home made?

Wired network, homemade cable (made at the local computer
store) Pin 1->Pin 3, Pin 2->Pin 6, Pins 4, 5, 7, and 8
straight through. The multimeter shows continuity on all
connections.

Still no ping from the xp machine to the w2k machine.

I have no office to plug into. I'm living the life of a
beach bum in rural Mexico. Poor me!

Where do I find the services/security policy settings?
Both in xt and w2k?

Doug,
I would try to buy factory molded cables to use on your
network. Hand crimped cables are well known for having
problems.

You can get to the security setting thru start/run and
typing secpol.msc in the open dialog box. The most common
way of accessing the services settings is through Computer
Management in Administrative Tools. It would seem to me
unlikely that you would have a problem there if you
haven't been there tweaking the settings.

If you are running your network at 100mbit try slowing it
down to 10mbit half duplex to see if it makes a difference.
I once saw a system with split pairs on the nework cables
it worked fine at 10mbit and when I tried cranking it up
to 100mbit the split pairs couldn't handle the speed and
communication became somewhat one directional. I ended up
cutting the ends off all the runs in the building and
recrimping them. Let me know.
