In last few days PC takes ages to boot XP, the Intro screen appears for
about 1 min, then a blank screen for about 2 mins then the XP login screen
appears. Disk activity is taking place all the time. Once the desktop
appears all works fine. No changes or software has been added to PC in last
few months, have run Norton Anti virus scan and defrag, no change to long
boot time.

Any Ideas what may be happening.?

Many users make the mistake of loading tons of programs at boot that they really don't need. Many also make the mistake of having full programs or files on the desktop. The desktop should be kept for shortcuts only and when you boot up you should have only the programs that you need for protection start. All other programs can be manually started as you need them. To turn off unecessary programs go>start\run and type in msconfig and then click ok. Now click the startup tab and uncheck what you don't need starting right away. You can also invoke a boot prefetch but this requires you to go into the registry. e:mail me if you think you can handle tweaking the registry. You should also minimize the time to display boot options. go>start\control panel\system\advanced tab\startup and recovery section\settings button\time to display list of operating systems and set this to a very low number like 3 or if you have only one OS and few users you can uncheck this option all together. Post back or e:mail me if you need more help. Welcome to the eXPeriance. :~)
