Desktop takes 3 mins to load after startup!

When I'm trying to login shortly after booting, my desktop do not appear for
about 3 min thereafter. I'm using standalone computer. The profile loads
fine. The Explorer.exe runs in background. The Task Manager doesn't show any
app eating off processor time. It did all started suddenly, and I cannot say
whether I did something specific with my computer to make this happen.
What may cause this issue?

How much RAM do you have installed?

It sounds like it used to boot up quickly, but now it doesn't. Roughly how long did it take to boot
to desktop before this problem occurred?

You need to provide more information.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Have you tried this approach?

2. No, all devices shown in Device Mgr seem to run fine.

3. Yes, selective startup has reduced delay to about 1 min, but that's still
too much! It was something like 15 sec before problems began.

I have 1Gb of RAM. It was like 15 sec to load the profile before. It's not
just 'not so quickly', it's just beyond the good & evil!

Two points:

1. I would primarily suspect a malware infection.

2. If you are not infected, my personal view is that the attention
many people pay to how long it takes to boot is unwarranted. Assuming
that the computer's speed is otherwise satisfactory, it may not be
worth worrying about. Most people start their computers once a day or
even less frequently. In the overall scheme of things, even a few
minutes to start up isn't very important. Personally I power on my
computer when I get up in the morning, then go get my coffee. When I
come back, it's done booting. I don't know how long it took to boot
and I don't care.

three minutes to load
the desktop of "terrible".

some people simply
need to wake up and
smell the coffee.

but if you're a hundred
years old, then three minutes
might be pretty quick...: )

however, there could be
a number of causes.

you might first try with
opening the msconfig
and disabling all the 'startups'
and non microsoft 'services'.

both 'tabs' can be found after
you click start>run>msconfig.

You have a number of failing services. Can you insert the dates and
times for each event so that the sequence of events become clearer.

A boot time of 15 seconds is exceptionally quick.
