my xp pro instllation takes over 5 mins to start. it gets to the "Windows is
starting up " screen, before the login screen, and stays there for about 5
mins. i have very few non essential services running, i have almost no extra
apps loading on startup. i have done a repair on my sp installation, but this
did nothing to help the suituation. can anyone give a suggestion to help fix
this?

Click Start / Run, type msconfig {OK}, then click the Startup tab.
Now remove each and every tick, then reboot the system to see
if this improves the situation. You can then add the ticks one at
a time until you know what's slowing down your PC.

I recently tuned a laptop in this way, reducing the startup time from
6 minutes to 2 minutes, by deferring the launch of some programs
and by disabling a non-essential service.

Things like firewalls and antivirus usually have service sthat startup early
and sometimes try to update themselves while other startup stuff is going on
so you might try just disabling the "Start when windows starts" on these
kinds of things.

Also you could check the settings for the swap file and any temp folders you
may have. On occasions I have seen these make a difference. The event viewer
may hold some clues but most likely it's just one thing and something
simple.

Not going to throw BS at you that may or may not be appropriate.

My XP w/SP2 takes just as long from boot, as opposed to login screen to stop
accessing the HD per ide led. Still haven't logged in yet. Once is enough,
always is pure BS. This has also varied with the XP updates over a number
of times without further updates. No 3rd party software changes made or
updated.
