After login, Window XP shows only background picture and no desktop icons, no
start menu, no quick menus just blank background picture. Cursor is visible.
Right click is not avail.

Here are things I've tried so far.

1. Restart in Safe Mode : same problem, black background picture with safe
mode logo in four corners. No icons, no start menu.

2. Alt+Ctrl+Delte to bring up the Task Manger: I typed "Explorer.exe" but
pop-up said "Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe' Make sure.... blah blah"

3. Insert original XP CD: tried to repair - it crash to blue screen.

4. run chkdsk: after 3% scan - crash

I can see this computer from other network computer. But I can't access any
of the files or folders. This is just crazy.

Anyone can help me please?

I thank you in advance.

Hi,

This generally has to do with display drivers. If you have recently done so
or ran the MS updates to do so, try a rollback via the Device Manager. If
this is not the case, use Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end process on Explorer.exe if
it is listed and either way, then go to File/New Task (Run) and type in:
Explorer.exe.

Explorer.exe repeatedly quits unexpectedly in Windows XP

If still nothing:

Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this
is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These
scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Kelly,

Explorer.exe is not running. Ctrl/Alt/Delete and new process "Explorer.exe"
is not working either.

After running your script, 'Restore Taskbar and Desktop", I get this new
error message... "logonui.exe error"

I've tried to run malware removal and anti-virus software but it quits after
few scan.

Is this caused by virus or something?

If so, burn BitDefender, or another program listed at the link below, to
a CD (using a working machine) and test the infected machine with it.
BitDefender also has a Rootkit checker on the Linux Desktop; run it if
you think that's the problem:

http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/

Download the executable rather than the .iso image, if one is
available.. it prompts you to insert a CD and burns the file, no problem.

Also run these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

SuperAntispyware

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Example:
how to get to "system restore" in "Windows XP"
http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+get+to+"system+restore"+in+"Windows+XP"

When I run System Restore from Start:programs:Accessories:System Tools,
and look in Task Manager, the program name is "rstrui.exe". When
I look for the location of that, I get

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\rstrui.exe (backup copy)

I can run that first one from Task Manager (use the whole path).

I don't remember you saying you could not log in. You said you had no
desktop or taskbar.
Can you boot into Safe Mode?
