XP Startup Blues

My XP Pro. was working fine until yesterday. Now, I cannot get it started
normally. Here's a sequence of events when I try to startup:
1. WindowsXP splash screen, with "progress" bar stays on for about 45
seconds.
2. Black screen on for about 30 seconds.
3. "Windows is Starting Up" sign stays on for about 2-1/2 MINUTES!!
4. "Welcome" Sign on for about 30 seconds.
5. Finally, I get a screen with my desktop picture but nothing else is on
it (except the mouse pointer). I get no task bar, no desktop Icons,
nothing! The screen just hangs there.
6. After a few minutes, I get access to the Task Manager which I use to try
to shut down. Shut down sequence seems to start but when it gets to "saving
your settings" it hangs up again and I have to shut down using the power
switch.

Safe Mode works fine. I tried restoring ystem using previous dates and it
seems to go thru the process but at the end I get a "failure" message.

I would appreciate any help and advise on this matter. Thanks and best
regards,
