Startup Blues

My XP Pro. was working fine until yesterday. Now, I cannot get it started
normally. Here's a sequence of events when I try to startup:
1. WindowsXP splash screen, with "progress" bar stays on for about 45
seconds.
2. Black screen on for about 30 seconds.
3. "Windows is Starting Up" sign stays on for about 2-1/2 MINUTES!!
4. "Welcome" Sign on for about 30 seconds.
5. Finally, I get a screen with my desktop picture but nothing else is on
it (except the mouse pointer). I get no task bar, no desktop Icons,
nothing! The screen just hangs there.
6. After a few minutes, I get access to the Task Manager which I use to try
to shut down. Shut down sequence seems to start but when it gets to "saving
your settings" it hangs up again and I have to shut down using the power
switch.

Safe Mode works fine. I tried restoring ystem using previous dates and it
seems to go thru the process but at the end I get a "failure" message.

I would appreciate any help and advise on this matter. Thanks and best
regards,

Art

First, after you access boot options screen, select the "Last known good" option to see if this fixes the problem.

If no joy, go to Safe Mode and perform the following troubleshooting steps to try and locate exactly where the problem is coming from.

Check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go to start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press OK. Click the Application menu item on the left and look for any "X" error messages that coincide with when you last saw this error message. If any are found, double click the error entry to see the details, click the Copy Icon on the details dialog screen and paste the error details in a reply to this message.
----
Go to Start/Run and type msinfo32 and press OK. Click Components/Problem Devices to check for possible hardware problems.

----
What have you done recently to the system? Installed any new hardware, software programs? Do you perform a regular anti-virus / spyware scan?

Check the following articles for troubleshooting.

Go back to safe mode to do some investigating. Since safe mode works, it
might be a driver causing this..as safe mode requires fewer drivers to
operate.
So, now, a couple of questions. Did you updates any drivers, install new
software?
Once in safe mode, check the event viewer and device manager for any
errors.
You can get to device manage by right clicking My
Computer>properties>hardware>device manager.
Event viewer can be found in Control panel>administrative tools.

Ronnie: Thanks for your reply. Yes, I do perform anti-virus/spyware scans
regularly. I tried the Last Known Good Option you suggested but no joy.

For the first 2, Event ID: 4609 and 8193, here is what I found.

"Event ID: 4609, Error code: 8007043C. Usually this event is followed by event id 8193 from "VSS". From a Microsoft support person (from a newsgroup post): "If the events occurred on a machine that was running in Safe Mode, these events are benign and you can ignore them - unfortunately they will always appear whenever you reboot the machine in Safe Mode. We plan to fix this bug for future versions of Windows (it is already fixed in Windows Server 2003)."

The event 1524 may be causing problems. Read the following MSKB article and follow the instructions for installing the free UPHClean utility.

Post back with the results.
