XP Shutsdown itself and re-boots

K

Kenw

Windows XP SP2 with all current updates closes down itself in exactly the
same way and with the same messges that the Worm Blaster gave in August
2003.

Other symtoms are both CD and DVD drives have ! marks in device manager also
the network adaptor will not function (in device manager adaptor is said to
be functiong ok).
I have scanned for virus/worms by removing the drive and placing in another
P.C. and drive is clean.

I would be very gratefil for help with this problem.

start/run, type

shutdown /a

This will at least stop the restarting. Then run the Malicious Software
Removal Tool (available on the windows update site.) If no help, you should
probably flash the BIOS, and run the MSRT again.

Hello Kenw,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

First, I want to thanks Mark for his kindly suggestion.

From your post, first make sure your system has been clean without any
viruses and malware/spyware. I suggest you try following steps to see if
the computer can boot into operation system:

Step 1 Last Known Good Configuration
Safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode configuration, disabling Windows
device drivers and using the standard VGA display adapter.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Last known good configuration, and press Enter.

Note: Some third party applications and some hardware device cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
temporarily while in Safe Mode.

If the issue continues, please go to step 2.

Step 2 Uninstall the third-party driver or programs

Step 3 Repair Installation

More about repair installation, please link to the KB315341: How to perform
