Removable Disc Drives Not Accessible

John Isenberg

Tried to burn a CD for first time in about a month and discovered that my
computer will not read any of the removable disc drives: Floppy (A), DVD
R-W (E), DVD Rom (F), Zip 250 (G). Zip and DVD Rom connected via ATA
adaptor. DVD R-W via IDE. Receive error message " X:\ is not accessible.
Access is denied" for all drives, except DVD-RW, that receives no message at
all. Can hear DVD R-W spin up, as well as Zip and floppy. Device Manager
indicates all devices working properly. No problem with hard drive access,
or other known problems.
All were functional at last try. No changes to computer other than normal
updates.

Acer Veriton 6800, Pentium D 930, XP SP2

Any ideas appreciated. I will contact Acer also. Thanks in advance.

John:
Just for starters...

In Services (Start > Run > services.msc)...

By any chance, has the IMAPI CD-Burning Service been Disabled or Stopped?

Thanks Anna.

IMAPI CD-Burning Service is set for manual operation (not disabled), and
was stopped, but starting service makes no difference.

Since first post I discovered that my external USB drive also is
unaccessible. The drive and partitiions are recognized, but access is
denied. Seems that some switch just turned off the access to all but the
hard drive. Hard drive is connected via SATA. Wrote to Acer, but I do
believe (and hope) that it is a Windows issue with an easy fix.

Thanks again.

John:
Re that "access is denied" message you refer to in connection with your USB
external HDD...

When you indicate the external USB HDD is recognized, you're referring to
the info in Disk Management which reflects that device and shows a drive
letter assigned to it, right?

Does it seem this "access denied" message might be the issue (at least with
reference to the USB external HDD) as detailed in...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881?

Hard to tell what's causing this problem that affects both your optical
drives as well as the USB external HDD. Could be either software or hardware
related.
Incidentally, we're assuming in all this that your system is malware-free.
You've checked that aspect, yes?

Possibly all that's needed is to undertake a Repair install of the OS but it
probably would be best to wait upon that at least until you hear from Acer
who (hopefully) can shed more light on the issue.

Anyway, if & when you receive any info from Acer that's pertinent -
particularly if they detail both the cause of the problem & of course, its
cure, please keep us informed .
Anna

P. S.
If you do post messages in the future re this issue, please include the
previous posts (or at least pertinent portions of those posts) that bear
upon the issue, OK? This gives everyone who comes upon this thread
sufficient background information so that they have a clear understanding of
the issue(s) involved - and more importantly - possibly post a response that
provides a solution to the problem.

Hi John

I have encountered a similar problem to the one you detail above, just
wondering if you were able to find a solution and if so what was it?

Many Thanks
Paul
