XP Re-booting on Windows Update

I am having a problem with my father's computer. Every time he does
windows update, it will download the files. Then, as it starts to
install the files, the machine re-boots itself without having
installed any of the files. I have run Norton in both normal and safe
mode (after a live update). Since it was re-booting, I thought maybe
it was the blaster worm, but I scanned for that in both normal and
safe mode with no luck. It only happens during Windows Update.

Thanks in advance...

At the update site click the customize option on the left side of the
screen, then activate the catalog function, then download and save the
updates so you may run while off the internet

Have been reading answer to this problem and wonder if it would solve mine.I
keep getting asked to download a Security Update when I have done so a few
times and been told installation was successful.Any help would be
appreciated.

Many times this problem is solved by uninstalling the update and then
downloading and reinstalling.

George, you must be referring to MS04-003 (aka KB832483). Its recurring
offer for download after seemingly successful 'installation' is well
recognized. Please read MVP Torgeir Bakken's response:
http://tinyurl.com/3hl63
and Kari's (MSFT) on Jan30 in the windowsupdate newsgroup:
"The patch is for MDAC 2.52, 2.53, 2.62, 2.70, 2.71 or 2.80 so if you want
to upgrade to one of those versions that should fix the problem for you.
Upgrading to 2.8 is recommended. Otherwise you will have to set WU to
ignore the update until the fix is published - which should be very, very
soon."

You might like to search for any further development since then.

Bee.
