Norton Disappeared After Installing XP SP2

I tried to update my father's computer with SP2 on a CD (to allow him to get
the latest Windows security updates). He has a really slow dialup internet
connection, so can't use the automatic update function. The installation
process seemed to get slower and slower until the computer completely locked
up. I switched off the computer and rebooted it. Nothing worked properly and
the Norton AV icon had disappeared from the Tool bar. I assumed Norton was
still on his computer somewhere however. I tried system restore, but things
didn't get much better. I took the computer store which charged $160 to get
things back to normal, but when I got the computer back, I noticed that the
Norton icon was still missing. I went looking for Norton in Program files,
but the folder had completely disappeared.
My father's computer was completely normal until the update. Any idea what
went wrong? I just hope his Registry has some record that his Norton
subscription is valid.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, but even assuming they have exactly the same version of
Norton available to put on my father's computer, it's not really their
fault... It seems that SP2 caused the original problem. There may be other
not-so-common programs missing, too, which can't be replaced :( I just hope
he still has the Norton disk and the updates (and all the registration
details). Maybe Norton can help?

Regards.
Ian.

Hi Ian,

If you have the Norton CD then Symantec Support will surely help you
re-activate a re-install of the product.

I remember the days in the 80's when the "Norton Utilities for DOS" came out
on 5" floppy. Peter Norton sure is getting plenty of mileage from his
surname! :)

An SP2 installation doesnt remove other Apps.
Whatever problem you had, when installing it 'may' have damaged the
shortcuts but certainly would'nt have removed any app

Norton / Symantec installs itself/files/registry entries all over the win
PC, it is allways possible whatever version of Norton that was installed
required a large update in order to be compatible with sp2. You should have
unloaded Norton & any other apps prior to running the sp2 update.

There are a number of free anti virus apps available, which perform as well
as or better than Norton. AVG being one

Thanks, gentlemen.
I'm not sure how to find Norton in the registry, but the Norton folders have
definitely disappeared (Doing a file search, I think I only found one
reference to "Norton"). I'll probably try installing it again (just hope I
don't get warning messages telling me that it is already installed), then go
through the painful process of downloading 2 or 3 years of
updates/definitions, etc on a dial-up connection.

BTW, I am looking at other AV programs at the moment. The same computer
store offered to install a copy of "NOD32" on my father's computer for almost
double the price of the basic program (Seems a bit expensive for inserting a
CD into his CD player!).

Oh well, live and learn.
Thanks guys.
Cheers.
Ian.
