xp setup demands admin paswd

Doing an initial install on blank formatted HDD using xp
upgrade and 98se CD for authorization.

It's not bad enough having to try to confront the various
nightmarish setup install stops, but after the slow creaky
entrance into the repair mode setup then demands an
administrator password! -- something that was never used
in the first place, and would have already been erased if
it had been.

I tried the obvious "administrator" "windows"
and "password" at which time it blew me out of setup and
rebooted, starting the agonizing process over again, this
time leading to a *different* setup failure (!) (page
fault in nonpaging area vs. irq not less than or equal)
and agonizingly offering me the choice of trying to enter
windows (which will fail) or come up with a password which
I have no hope of guessing.

Any clues?

If you are using XP Home, try leaving the password blank.
