XP Scanner Wizard overrides mfgr's software

Guest

This problem occurs with both an old Compaq S4100 scanner & New HP Scanjet
4370, either on USB port connections. Scanners are recognized by Scanner and
Camera Wizard and work just fine, but if I try to use the mfgr. software,
(tray icons, HP Image zone, push buttons, etc.) XP tells me the scanner is
not detected and says to check connections. Accessing TWAIN32 in PS also
instigates a scan preview.

Initially thought of as a scanner problem (hence, three scanners and a
rather narly debate with HP tech support later), I'm looking for a way to
allow XP to let the scanner software/hardware buttons be recognized. HP
doesn't have a solution, and Microsoft wants me to ask HP. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Is your issue in any way related to the below listed post?
I posted this one on the hardware group yesterday.

Chuck

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a multifunction machine (Epson stylus cx 5600) that crapped out - the
printing function, not the scanner. I purchased a Brother multifunction
machine but had considerable trouble installing the scanner driver. Tech
assistance wasn't much help, so I returned the machine and got another Epson
(6600) thinking that since the original scanner worked OK I wouldn't have
any issues with the new one. Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem and
I guess there's something with my XP setup that has changed since I
installed the 5600 about a year ago. (I have installed SP2 and all the
numerous updates). I'm assuming that something related to SP2??? is causing
the problem. The printer itself has installed properly; it prints from
various programs; copies; shows up in the printer folder, etc. It seems that
the issue is related solely to the scanner.

The scanner software appears to install properly. When I turn on the machine
and connect the USB cable, the "Install new hardware wizard" comes up. When
I select install automatically, the wizard searches for a while and then I
get the following popup:

--------------------------
Found New Hardware Wizard
There was a problem installing the hardware:
Epson Stylus CX6600
An error occurred during installation of the driver
The required section was not found in the INF.
Click Finish to close this wizard
------------------------------------

Any thoughts as to where I can start looking for the problem? Per tech
support I downloaded most recent drivers and installed, but the above popup
still came up. Every time I reboot the "install new hardware wizard" comes
up and then I get the popup again.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this has been going on for a
week now.

Chuck

Yes Cattle Call, it could be! My old scanner worked fine with WIN98. The
problem began when I purchased XP on a new computer. Related articles from
2004 appear to start solving the problem, though there was no actual
solution. If your scanner appears to be loaded but not accessible (ie test
scans with mfgr. software result in error- check connection" or "scanner not
detected"), look for your scanner in the XP wizard, or printers and
hardware>scanner>properties>test. If you can operate your scanner trhough
those hoops, it will prove that XP is overriding the mfgr. software and yes,
there's no help readily available.

Tech supports solution is to uninstall, re-install, unplug, replug, purchase
more software. I guess I've PO'd HP support, because they can't seem to
figure it out.
Don't purchase any more scanners! This is my 3rd!

My Epson worked fine before SP2, and it works fine after SP2. I always use
the manufacturer's software rather than all of those strange wizards. So,
my opinion is that it is HP's fault.

I don't have any solution for you, but dug into a similar problem once. I
found that there was an issue with the plug and play hardware id not having
a proper match in the manufacturers .inf file causing Windows to 'override'
it. I don't know if this is of any use to you, except in so far as you
might suggest it as a possibility to HP. You might also see if there is
another version (perhaps an older one) of the driver to try.

I'm beginning to think it's a Microsoft problem. This didn't happen to me on
the install prior to SP2. Since SP2 (or maybe one of the updates) the "Found
New Hardware Wizard" ALWAYS attempts to start after the manufacturer's
software installation process begins (after the printer/scanner is plugged
in).

Thank you gentlemen, this obviously is a quirky subject and all clues help in
sluething. As I recall, my scanner did work somewhat well immediately prior
to having the whole system go in to full recovery, at which time I did
install SP2. (I'm not sure if I had that prior).

HP's last suggestion was to look for USBMGR.EXE in the HP scanning software,
to see if my computer has USB capability. (That was about the point where I
put them on ignore.) Of course it has USB- I use them for cameras, scanners,
and other stuff just fine.

HP doesn't really have any other solutions, and I think quite possibly that
Microsoft XP might have a solution, but apparantly they want me to pay for a
solution. (I was hoping someone had a brother in Tech support) UNtil then,
I'll keep looking for a solution, and let you know if I find one. With all
the scanning and copying I do I sure miss those buttons.

Interesting. My error message always refers to something missing in the INF;
unfortunately, it doesn't specify any particular inf file, ie., M/S or
manufacturer.

I've attached a copy of a post from "BigJIm" which was on the "hardware"
newsgroup and my reply.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, your suggestion partially worked. After the "Found New Hardware Wizard"
popped up, I dismissed it and started the Epson CD, selected install drivers
and off it went. Unfortunately, when the screen popped up advising to
connect the USB cable and turn on the machine, since the machine was already
on and connected, the installation hung at that point and wouldn't proceed
any further. The only thing left to do was end the program through task
manager. However, that procedure did manage to get the printer properly
installed as it now appears in the hardware manager (prior to this process
it was not showing up although the printer appeared to work properly).

I then attempted to install the scanner using the "add imaging device"
button in the "Scanners and cameras" folder in Control Panel; however, the
appropriate wizard failed to open up. I then attempted to install using the
"Add Hardware Wizard" which found that the scanner wasn't appropriately
installed. The installation failed several times. I did note that on two of
the attempts I was able to select an "inf" file on either the CD or in the
"Windows/inf" folder. The one on the CD was the older of the two and that
one failed with the same error message I originally posted. The second "inf"
file in the "Windows/inf" folder was a newer version from updated scanner
drivers file downloaded from Epson.com. That attempt also failed with the
same error message I originally posted (shown below).

Any other thoughts would be appreciated as I at least appear to be half way
there.

If you are extremely lucky, The OEM's web site has an uninstall/cleanup
utility.
Another "large hammer" approach is to go into safe mode, control panel, etc.
uninstall the appropriate drivers, and reboot. The USB subsystem may also
need to be uninstalled. Why?
Some of the old driver/USB links/associations may still be present. By
removing and reinstalling the USB ports and controllers, new
links/associations are generated when the drivers are installed.

HP's scanner buttons are a bit of a pain. It may be that you would be
better off without them.
I have a HP3970. Every once in a while, the windows and HP software gets
into a fight over which is actually using the scanner.
Since a full driver install sets up three different drivers for the scanner
(one windows, 2 HP) I'm not too surprised.
