XP repair install problem

Vic Baron

Had a mobo crash - bought new mobo with different chipset. Installed all
hard drives, etc. Have an XP cd that I slipstreamed SP3 which I have used
before. Booted from cd - went through the usual screens -came to the screen
where it asked which partition - selected C -then "keep original format" -
then I thought it would give me the option of a full install or repair -
didn't - immediately went to rebooting system -saw a flash of a boot menu
showing TWO copies of XP - main screen in XP came up and it went thru the
itemizing, etc. Whole process took 6 - 7 minutes - not what I expected. Was
in a clean copy of XP - few icons - bare bones. Checked the boot.ini and set
the timeout to more - rebooted and picked the "other" (my original) copy of
XP - booted just fine! All icons and links seemed ok. Installed new mobo
drivers - all seems well so far EXCEPT :) -

IE7 - when run will go to the default website but if I type ANYTHING in the
url bar - it opens one or two instances of itself and just hangs - have to
use task manager.

I'm thinking that I did NOT get a repair install of my good xp.

Is there a way to FORCE a repair install???

Thanx,

Vic

Hi Vic,

I had also created a Slip-Stream Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
Upgrade CD and it works just fine. Only one problem, Microsoft .NET
Framework 3.0 does not / will not install with Service Pack 3. Nothing I
tried worked, so I reformatted and reinstalled a Slip-Stream CD with Service
Pack 2 installed and everything installed and then upgraded to Service Pack
3.

Procedure to Reinstall Windows XP!

If you want to save any files, make a backup of those files off the Hard
Drive and proceed.

00. - Turn off the printer.
01. - Go into Computer Bios and Set Defaults and Exit, if you know how.
Make sure the Boot Order is set to Boot to CD-Rom Drive First.
02. - Insert Windows XP CD into CD-Rom Drive.
03. - Reboot the computer.
04. - Press any key to begin to boot from the Windows XP CD.
05. - Welcome to Setup.
06. - Reinstall XP - Press Enter
07. - F8 - I Agree
08. - Esc: Don't Repair
09. - Select Windows XP Highlighted Partition to repair Windows XP on.
10. - Press Enter.
11. - Follow on screen prompts to allow the Deletion and reinstallation of
the Windows XP System Files.
12. - Then Copies files to partition.
13. - Now it Reboots to Windows XP. Don't press a key to boot to CD.
14. - And now it installs Windows XP.
15. - You need to be here now.
16. - Starts at 39 Minutes to Complete.
17. - At 33 minutes, you need to set Time and Time Zone, if need to.
18. - And Enter The Product Key.
19. - At 29 minutes, you need to pick the Network, if needed to.
20. - Now wait for Reboot and you are done.
21. - Go online and go to Windows Update and download and reinstall all the
patches.

Note: - If you have the original Windows XP CD, not Service Pack 2 CD, you
will need to have already downloaded to Your Briefcase Folder,
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

You must install Windows XP Service Pack 2 before you can use Windows
Update. Also you must install the tool to validate your copy of Windows
after upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2, before you can begin to
reinstall all the Windows XP Patches.

Is this what you wanted?

Yes - I wasn't sure where the prompt came up. Last time it went from 10 to
13 in one jump.

Since have found out that doing a repair install of XP with IE7 installed
will result in IE7 not working - have to ininstall/reinstall after repair,
so that explains that.

Thanx!

Through the years I guess I've done 20 or 30 XP repair installs on many
systems - this is the *first* time I've had an issue.

I'll read the references you cited and dig in. :)

Thanx for the help!
