Do I need to do a Windows XP repair?

Hello all...

I have been dealing with a series of BSOD's, most recently after attempting
to use Windows Memory Diagnostic (clean boot) to test my memory and the
program froze before any errors were recorded and I was not allowed to exit
the program. As such I restarted, went into my BIOS to change the boot
sequence, and during booting I got 6 BSOD's in a row. I'm dealing with my
BSOD problems on another front, but I got another screen error that goes as
follows:

*******

Windows could not start because...file is missing or corrupt

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt repair...

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

*******

Since then (about 3 days) my computer has been starting and operating
normally (no BSOD's although I have not been stressing my system). I have
been researching doing a repair and it seems the most definitive article to
date is: Micheal Stevens'...'How To Perform a Windows XP Repair Install'.

When my friend built my computer for me we purchased an OEM copy of Windows
XP Home with SP2. Since then I have installed SP3. Micheal Stevens' repair
quide seems to be based on an earlier version of XP and I was wondering if
everything still holds true for my newer version? For example:

....Do I still need to manually delete the Undo_guimode.txt file from the
Windows\System32 folder?

Other questions:

....Did Microsoft fix the problem with data loss when doing a repair with
later releases of XP?

....When doing a repair is the whole OS replaced or is the missing or
corrupted file repaired? (I have read conflicting information)

....Can I do the repair with my CD and then later reinstall SP3 or do I need
to create a slipstream CD?

The biggest question I have is that my system seems to be OK at the present
and I have only seen the damaged file report only once so is it worth
attempting a repair?

Thanks...Dennis from Minnesota
