XP Remote Desktop - works on LAN but not WAN

I have been struggling to get Remote Desktop to work properly for me &
would really appreciate some help. I am trying to be able to connect
from my work laptop to my home machine when on the road.

I set up router to forward port 3389 (TCP) to the XP machine's IP
address. If I hook up laptop to the HOME LAN and try to access
another desktop by typing IP address (ie. 192.168.1.xxx), no problems.
But, if I try to connect using the router's WAN IP (ie.
65.61.xxx.yyy), or my DynDns name (ie. Joe.homeip.net), I cannot
connect.

Funny thing is, If I use a dialup modem connection instead,
Joe.homeip.net works no problem! I am confused...

Things I tried:
1. Checked port forwarding in router, seems ok
2. Checked DynDns setup, not problem.
3. Can ping and get reply from 65.61.xxx.yyy), or my DynDns name (ie.
Joe.homeip.net)
4. Remove ZoneAlarm &/or reset port forwarding. Doesnt not work w/ or
w/o ZA.
5. Tried to dial in using modem connection to ISP & connect using
Joe.homeip.net -- it works!

NETWORK SETUP is:
Cable Modem: RCA
Protocols: TCPIP, and NETBUI for file/printer sharing
Router: RCA, 192.168.1.1, DHCP enabled, TCP port 3389 forwarded to
192.168.1.xxx
Wireless Router: DLink DI623, DHCP dissabled (using as switch only).
Hardwire connected
DynDns to handle DNS translation to local IP.

RoadRunner ISP
\\
RCA CABLE MODEM
\\
RCA ROUTER
\\
DLINK DI624 == [ W2K Laptop client ] -- telephone modem -->
(DHCP off)
\\
(zone alarm)
[ XP Machine1 host ]

I am really confused about the why external WAN is not working, but
the phone modem is working. Tips on how to troubleshoot (and trace
port traffic would be a big help).

Its possible your work network administrators are blocking TCP Port 3389 traffic outbound. Check with them concerning that possibility..
