Remote desktop only working with one pc

I don't think this is a MS issue but I've tried everywhere and everything
else.
I need to remotely access computers at work for troubleshooting.

They are behind a dsl modem (with a static WAN IP) and then behind a NAT
router.

I have five machines, each with a static IP, each has been setup to use and
allow remote desktop connections all using different RDP ports (ie 3391,
3392, 3393, etc). On the router, all ports have been forwarded to the
respective IP's, ie: port 3391 gets forwarded to 192.168.1.3 port 3391.
Windows firewall has also been turned off on all machines and there isn't any
other firewall programs running.

So a remote desktop logon looks like this:

internetIPofRemotePC:339x

So here is the problem, I can only connect remotely to one computer, when
trying to connect to the other machines (not at the same time) I get an
unable to connect error. All settings are the same on each computer.

I can however connect to each computer locally when connected to the lan. So
that tells me that remote desktop is working properly but either the router
or the modem is configured incorrectly.

When I connect internally I can connect using the IP of the lan machine or
it's computer name both followed by the unique RDP port,

If it matters, the dsl modem is a netopia 3546 002 and the router is a
linksys wrt51ag.

Any ideas?

Well, if you can connect to each PC over the local LAN from another PC on
the local LAN then it comes down to a port forwarding issue with the router
or the DSL modem. You can run the http://www.canyouseeme.org test from each
PC. If the test fails then you need to resolve the port forwarding issue.
You can isolate further by removing the router and connecting each PC
individually to the modem. If the test still fails then its an issue with
the DSL modem. Some DSL modems also act as routers so you would need to
figure out how to forward ports through the modem...

So it turns out that it was a microsoft issue:|

Unfortunately I couldn't pin point exactly what it was so I just formatted
and reinstalled windows XP, disabled the firewall, changed the rpd ports and
all is working now:D

To be fair though, I wasn't the one that originally installed windows so it
could have been something the original installer did or something caused the
malfunction like another piece of software.

Either way I'm happy now:D

I'd like to bump this message because I'm having the same problem at another
office and I really don't want to format and reinstall windows.

Doing a repair option on windows doesn't work either.

I've checked and rechecked everything.

Specified rdp port
disabled all firewalls through gpo (these are workgroup computers and not on
a domain)
Gave all users passwords
enabled remote desktop
disabled the welcome sceen and disabled fast user switching.
all computers on the lan can be accessed via RD from all computers on the lan.

Again, only one computer can be accessed from the internet and if that
computer is shutdown another one will be accessible.

At my first site I can access all computers from the web except for one
(which is the only one I haven't formatted and reinstalled winodws on). And
my routers settings and all other settings are the same on site 2 as they are
for site 1 (so that should elminate any external configuration issues).

Anyone have any idea as to what the problem may be?

Most likely router issue (unless you made a configuration mistake).
You can try to use a different router (I assume you use a cheap ones), or
better yet: setup VPN server. You can use and old PC for that. You will
never regret it.

Additional hardware is not an option.

I've tried different routers with no affect.

Originally at site 1 I had this problem and made this thread. The only thing
that fixed the issue was formatting and reinstalling windows.
Now at site two I'm trying to do the same t hing and the same issue has
happened again and I really don't want to reinstall windows and other needed
software.

f you have a router/firewall in place on the network where your pc/server
resides. You will need to make sure that it is configured to allow the
appropriate traffic into the destination machine. Please consult your
router's manual and look for port forwarding. Common ports to forward are
port 80 for web, port 21 for ftp, and port 25 for mail. Only forward the
ports that you need to use. To verify that your router is setup correctly,
visit www.canyouseeme.org.

Open you web browser and type the IP Address of the router in the address
window (192.168.1.1 is the default IP of Linksys routers). Enter username
(blank by default) and your password (XXXXX). Note: If you have changed the
default password then use the value you have changed it to.

Step 2: Click on the orange Advanced button on top and then click Forwarding.

Step 3: Create name for your new forwarding rule

Step 4: Select the range of ports you want to forward
This information depends on the needs of the services you're making
available over the Internet. In this case we're demonstrating with the port
used by Windows Remote Desktop Connection (3389).

Step 5: Select the correct Protocol Type - either TCP, UDP, or both. If you
are not sure, choose both.

Step 6: Enter the IP address of the target machine on your network that the
traffic gets forwarded to.

Step 7: Enable the port forwarding rule you just created.

Step 8: Click the Apply button to save the rule.

There are a couple of gotchas you should be aware of:

Because most routers use NAT (Network Address Translation), you can only
open a specific port or ports to one computer at a time. For example: If you
have 2 web servers on your network, you cannot open port 80 to both
computers. You will need to configure 1 of the web servers to use a different
port (8080 for example). Now you can open port 80 to the first computer and
then open port 8080 to the other computer.
If your application needs multiple ports open, you can make multiple entries
here or alternately have a look at the DMZ option.

USE CAUTION if you intend to experiment with the DMZ option as it will
essentially expose all the ports on one computer to inbound Internet traffic.

OMG!!!!! I have finally figured it out!!!!

I finally figured out what was causing me not to connect! After much
research and allot of thinking back to how the systems were set up originally
I found only one common thing, all of the system had some norton product on
it which I had removed along with anything else norton and symantec that was
in the add/remove programs list.

After hearing about several people who were having problems completely
removing symantec products from their pc (all of which I supplied them with
this link: »service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ni···10510636) I decided to take my
own advice and run the symantec software removal tool RnisUPG.exe. After
running the tool and rebooting I can now, finally access two systems that
previously I could not access!!!!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and screw you symantec!!!!!!!!!!
