XP Pro Won't Print To Multiple Printers

Hi y'all,

I have one XP Pro workstation in my client's network which suddenly today
can't print to most of the printers attached, local or networked. I've been
logging in remotely to the system for the past two hours, trying various
things, but so far I've come up with zilch. I have to go onsite tomorrow
morning if I haven't resolved it remotely, so I'm hoping some of you might
have some feedback to offer me. Help out a fellow girl geek, won't you? :)

Here's what's happened and what's been tried:

XP Pro workstation has an HP Deskjet 870Cse on LPT1 which was working fine
as default printer until today. Page printed in color today began to look
like the ink was running out (only printing in one hue) and then suddenly
began printing gibberish across the page. The user cancelled his print
document and replaced the ink cartridge. Then it stopped working at all,
giving a "Document Failed to Print" error each time, even for the test page.

At that point I was called in. I had him reboot and visit the HP site to
look for driver updates. Turns out there *is* no XP download - this printer
uses built-in XP driver. So I had him delete the printer icon from Printers
& Faxes, then use the Add a Printer dialog to reinstall. Same thing.

I had him try to print to any of the other printers: an HP OfficeJet G85 on
a JetDirect print server, and 2 HP LaserJet 1100s shared on an NT server on
the network. None of them would print - all gave the "Document Failed to
Print" error.

I told him to run Norton One Button Checkup and Repair All problems. At that
point he left and I logged in remotely. I rebooted from the Norton repairs.
System was defragged the night before so that isn't an issue. I looked for
new software installed recently - only thing I found was RuppLynx, a utility
for the Sharp Organizer. Checked their support site, no mentions of printing
glitches.

I checked the HP & Microsoft sites for any relevant news bulletins about a
known issue, but none found. Read through the Microsoft Printing Solution
Center, nothing relevant there. I used msconfig to disable some of the
nonessential startup items, such as the Kodak EasyShare thing, MSN
messenger, QuickBooks Delivery Agent, etc. I checked the Windows Update site
for pending critical updates (there were 3) and downloaded, installed, and
rebooted. At that point I was able to get a successful print message from the
server when I sent a test page to one of the LJ1100s on the network, then
again to the other one.

Now I've been reading through two weeks' worth of messages in this
newsgroup, and still don't have any conclusive theories about the other
printers. I would really love to arrive tomorrow armed with at least one
idea to troubleshoot with. Would anyone care to respond? (Even if it's a few
days later?)

Many thanks,
Maggie

For the local printer that you dealt with first... did you delete the
drivers from

File, Server Properties, Drivers tab. If you left these intact, you're just
printing with the old drivers. This step should be done on ALL the printers
installed if you want to uninstall and then reinstall correctly.
