xp pro upgrade frequently reboots during install

David

Over the past couple of days, I have been trying (unsuccesfully) to upgrade
from xp home to xp pro. During the install, setup will either hang or reboot
during the 'setting up the start menu', 'Registering components', or 'saving
settings' phases (randomly).
Prior to upgrading, I made sure that all device drivers were current
(including bios) and digitally signed for XP.
The only hardware upgrade was to a Nvidia GeForce4 MX video card. During the
configuration phase of setup, the screen will go blank and come back on
frequently.

System:
MB - Chaintech 7njl6
CPU- Athlon XP 2900+
Ram - 512
Chipset - nvidia nforce2 Ultra 400 + mcps
HDD - Western Digital EIDE 80GB

Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

I had a similar problem upgrading from XP after a motherboard swap (a
repair install) and found a work around on the Microsoft Web Site. It
involves hitting shift F10 to enter the command line console when the
install hangs. Then you need to rename the catroot2 folder in the
system32 folder to a bogus name so the installer will recopy the files.
It seems some the files that may be left there cause the install
problems and it hangs with an error message. Check out the exact
proceedure at the Microsoft site. Be sure to search on the exact error
message in the XP section search engine. This is a major known install
bug. Amazing MS doesn't find stuff like this and fix it.
