Cannot install NIC on upgrade to XP

I recently upgraded from Win98 to WinXP Professional. During the upgrade, my
computer froze while XP was installing devices. After an hour I performed a
hard reset. When setup resumed, the computer froze again in the same spot. I
finally rebooted using a Win98 boot disk and checked the setup error log. It
showed that XP was trying to install the Intel Pro 10/100 VE adapter (which
worked fine with Win98) when the system hung. I removed the NIC and setup
then completed without problems.

Since then, I have tried repeatedly to install the Pro VE adapter. XP ships
with a signed driver for it, but each time I install the card and reboot, the
computer hangs (presumably while it's trying to load the XP driver). I've
also tried to install a driver from Intel's website (in case the XP driver is
buggy), but the system hangs with it as well.

Add/remove programs lists the old Intel Pro VE installation from Win98, but
the uninstall program will not run, not even in compatibility mode. I finally
installed a no-name cheap NIC, which installed without a hitch. Does anyone
know what might be causing the problem with the Pro VE adapter, and how do I
fix it? Thanks.

First, youre much better off installing a clean xp installation (boot to xp
cd),than
upgrading from 98,one big problem(s),xp by default runs NTFS file system,98
uses FAT32.You can/could convert to NTFS.With intel,1st install thier chipset
installation utility for youre MB chipset, locate an intel board with the
same chip
& install from intel.Intel 10/100 VE can also use the 100/1000 CT network
soft-
ware v10.3,install after the chipset, the CT is a much better version than
VE.Also,
before either install,go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:netsh Winsock reset
Then
type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,type:EXIT Restart pc,install software
after
xp reboots.

Drivers from Windows 98 may not work in XP. You should have ran the
XP compatiblity check utility before installing XP. You would then
have known about the "potential" problem with the network adapter and
you could have un-installed it before processing the upgrade.

You need to know that several different network adapters (NIC) have
different versions of their controlling chips and some may not be
always compatible with XP.

I would have preferred to do a clean installation of XP, but I needed to
preserve a program that I no longer have the install disk for. As for the
file system, I did not convert to NTFS because I did not know if I would need
to uninstall XP and return to Win98.

I had already tried updating the software for my MB before I posted my
question. The Pro VE adapter uses a CNR interface that I believe is supported
by the I/O controller chip (mine is ICH2). I updated it with software written
for my MB and that supports WinXP. It did not help. My computer still hangs
if I install the Pro VE adapter.

Would you please explain to me what the "netsh Winsock reset" command is for?

Thanks.

Thank you for your reply. I did run the XP compatibility check, numerous
times, to make sure I had all the updated drivers I needed prior to upgrade.
I ran the compatibility check with two NICs: the Intel Pro VE adapter and a
Linksys USB to Ethernet adapter. The compatibility wizard did not target the
Pro VE adapter as needing a new driver, presumably because XP ships with a
driver for it. (It did target the Linksys as problematic.) To be on the safe
side, I made sure I had updated drivers for both adapters. When my computer
hung with the Pro VE adapter, I was able to install the Linksys and it worked
fine. However, I would still like to be able to use the Pro VE if I can
figure out how to get my computer to load a driver for it.
