Upgrading to XP Pro from NT4

G

Guest

I'm trying to upgrade an NT box to XP Pro. The initial upgrade failed at the
first attempt so I had to reinstall NT and apply Service Pack 6 so the XP Pro
Upgrade CD would work.
However, during the upgrade I've received File Copy Errors on the following
files: setupldr.bin, setupreg.hiv and setupdd.sy_ (all while trying to copy
to C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\) and the final one was setupldr.bin when trying to copy
to C:\$LDR$\.
The upgrade process finished and automatically restarted the system. During
the restart, "Microsoft Windows XP Pro Setup" was selected but the system
just kept restarting like it was caught in a loop.
Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Use the XP upgrade CD to boot the computer (set the BIOS to
be first boot device). Select install, delete the current
partition and do a clean install. You'll need the NT CD to
"prove" the upgrade is allowed. You do not have to have NT
loaded.

1. Read the End-User License Agreement, and then press
F8.

Note If your Windows XP CD-ROM is an upgrade, you are
prompted to insert a CD-ROM of a previous operating system
to verify upgrade compliance. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM,
and then insert the CD-ROM from your previous operating
system into the CD-ROM drive. You can use the CD-ROM to
upgrade from the following versions of Windows:
Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional

Cheers Jim - I didn't realise that you didn't have to have the original OS
installed.

I've tried this a couple of times and the installation has fallen down each
time - the first time it stopped was after 5% of the 'Setup is copying files'
whilst copying batmeter.dll. The second time it stopped at 17% on driver.cab.

Is the yellow progress bar and the %age number an accurate gauge? Should I
just leave the system for an hour to see if it sorts itself out?

Kind regards,

James

It might continue. The gauges are close but not exact. Be
sure to remove all devices, such as scanners, printers and
if you can, any wireless keyboards and mice. You don't even
need to have a sound card installed.
Once you have XP loaded, re-install the devices.

Thanks Jim.

The current attempt has been frozen on 11% (file cdmedia.hlp) for more than
an hour now.

The system has got very little hardware - no peripherals at all. Do you
think it may be worth stripping out the sound card, network card and modem?
As you can tell, I'm fast running out of ideas!!!

It wouldn't hurt. BTW, did you run the upgrade
compatibility check (browse the CD) to see if there were any
problems?

I did run the check when NT was installed and said there we no issues.

I'll strip the devices out tomorrow morning and let you know how I get on.

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it.

Well I stripped out the sound card, modem and network card and the
installation fell down again at 17% on driver.cab.

I've now tried another brand new XP Upgrade CD and the installation has been
frozen at the same point for nearly an hour. HELP!!!

Try some new RAM, a single 256 or 512 stick to avoid
conflicts.
