I'm attempting upgrading XP Home to XP Pro, both SP2. i've uninstalled Norton
AntiVirus, loaded the Upgrade CD, and it proceeds normaly until it reboots to
continue the install. I get a ""Setup cannot locate the Windows installation
you want to upgrade." After i hit F3, the system reboots and i get to the
"Please select the operatiung system to start" I select MS Windows XP Home
Edition (other choices are Recovery Console and XP Pro Setup), and get the
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
....\hal.dll"
i've expanded hal.dl_ from the original recovery DVD, form the XP Pro
upgrade, and neither worked. i'm thinking at this point it's a
wipe-and-load.
here's my boot.ini::
[boot loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"
i've scoured these groups for info, this is my last resort before i do a
clean install.
