XP Home upgrade to XP Pro, Missing system file

I attempted to upgrade my Compaq Laptop from XP home to Xp pro. I selected
the upgrade option and all went well to a point. Then I received this error
message and the install stopped.
(<windows root>\system32\hal.dll. is corrupt or missing)
It said to reinstall the file and then reboots with two options, start (XP
home edition) or start (XP pro install) I started the pro install again and
the error came up again. I then started the home edition and the install
finished??? But upon reboot at the end it again gives me the same options,
upon checking the system info it claims XP Pro is installed but the PC only
will start with the home edition option. I am wondering is Pro installed??? I
saw articles on the knowledge base related to this missing file, but it is
for a Win98 or WinME upgrade, nothing about XP Home edition. The fix given
there really does not apply to this.
That said, a friend had me attempt a complete install instead of the upgrade
and upon doing so the install starts out fine. It installs the needed files
but then an error comes up saying windows can not find any drives and the
install stops.
When I start with the Home edition option everything seems to be fine, I
have not encountered any problems yet, only the option at start up. Any help
would be appriciated.
