XP Pro SP2 Wireless issue

S

Scott Micale

I have a machine that has a Linksys Wireless 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g usb card
attached to it that connects to a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless -B Broadband
Router. I am not using this unit as a router, basically only the switch
side that connects to my local network and the wireless portion of it. I
can get connected to the wireless network and access the internet just fine.
The problem I am having is that I can't ping certain IP's on my network. I
can't ping 192.168.1.1 for example, but I can ping 192.168.1.2. I can ping
the 192.1681.1 from another station just fine. If I plug this machine into
the Linksys Router through Ethernet I can ping the 192.168.1.1. What I am
not sure of now is if the wireless XP machine has a problem in it or if it
is the Linksys Router is somehow blocking traffic to this port. I am not
using any WEP or any security on the Router except to filtering MAC
Addresses. I have tried mulitple wireless cards and run into the same issue
with them all.

Hope someone has experienced this before and can point me in the right
direction.

Thanks

Hello Scott,

Thank you for your post!

From your description I would like to provide you with the following
sugggestion to isolate the issue.

1. Please first disable the filtering MAC address on the router and check
the issue.

2. As far as I know, many wireless routers have a built-in internal IP
address with 192.168.1.1 which could be managed via web. To avoid the
conflict I sugggest you change the IP address of the router to another IP
range(such as 10.1.1.1) and check the issue.

3. If the issue persists please change to another wireless router and
verify if the issue is related to it.

Hope the information helps.

Best Regards,

Jason Tan

Jason,

I will try disabling the MAC filter, but I have changed the default router
local address to 192.168.1.249. I really can't put the router on a
differnent network like 10.0.1.1 because I would haveno way of talking to my
main network. I'll see what the MAC filter does and get back to you.

Thanks
-Scott

Jason,

I disabled the MAC filters and then it started to allow me to ping the
192.168.1.1 address. I then re-enabled the MAC Filter and it still
continued to work. I think it will work for awhile and then for some reason
it quits after awhile. After I disabled the MAC filter and saw it working I
tried turning on WEP and once it was on I couldn't ping that address again.
I did set the client up for WEP just so you know. One other thing I noticed
is that my subnet Mask on my network is 255.255.0.0. The Router will not
allow me to set it to that. It only has the option for 255.255.255.0. Not
sure if that should matter or not.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks
-Scott

Hello,

Thank you for your reply!

From your test it appears that the issue should be related to the wireless
router. Based on my research I don't think the issue is related to WEP. At
this point, to best understand the issue I suggest you contact the vendor
of the wireless router since we are not familar with the product. Your
understanding is appreciated.
