I hope this is the right forum.

I have a wireless nic in my system (PCI). I can connect to my wireless router with no problem. However, every so often (timeline is random), the network is unavailable.

By this I mean, the NIC displays the SSID, Speed and Wirelss Strength as Excellent. However, when I try to browse, ping or perform othe rnetwork functions I can't. Further, I can see the SSID in the wireless network browser, and when I try to connect, it just times out.

I have to reset my router.

Also, I am using WEP64, but that doesn't seem to be an issue. Preamble is set to AUTO, RTS and Frag Threshold are at: 2346, Data TXfer is Auto.

It is a Seimens SE567 and my NIC is a DlinkG520. The only thing that has changed is the router (about 2 months ago), but this just started happening.

I would appreciate any pointers or assistance.

Thanks.

Yes I have - should have mentioned that as well.

I've tried pretty much everything I can think of. I've even contacted Telus
(ISP) and they are going to send me a new Router (Seimens won't touch it as
they say the Telus modified the firmware code).

Will have to see what happens.

Thanks

WEP? Oh man, if that's the only option your WiFi router has, you're
living dangerously. WEP's been cracked years ago. WPA is pretty much
useless now too:

Heck, even WPA2 is getting easier to crack.

Using SP3 yet? If at SP2, do you at least have KB917021 installed?

My bad, I am using WPA2. Also, I have KB917021 installed.

I've rec'd the new router, set it up and configured it. I still get the same
problem. I then purchased a new Wireless NIC and still (periodically) have
the same problem.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Open Device Manager, open the properties on your ethernet card, click
the Power tab, and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power". You can do the same thing with a USB device by
disabling the power saving feature of all "USB Root Hub" entries.

Hi,

Place the .cmd from line 411 in either your startup folder or desktop.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

The link that 411 takes you to is broken here. I just thought you might want
to know.

And, again, have you tried updating your computer to SP3 yet?

WEP was the only protocol that my router supported. The new one supports
WPA2.

In any case, the problem is solved.

It was the Kaspersky NDIS Anti-Virus wrapper (filter) for the wireless NIC.
I disabled it and now I have no problems at all and everything has been up
for a few days now.

Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions.

Cheers.

I have the exact same problem. I have both wired and wireless
connections to my home system. The wired links are like the Eveready
Bunny, but whenever my wife or daughter start or wake their laptop,
they get a bogus IP from the DHCP. It's as if the DHCP request is
getting resolved by the cable modem (all Linksys) and not the router.

Have you found a solution yet?
