XP PRO Screen blank while computer is on

MESSAGE REPEATED BECAUSE I MADE AN ERROR IN TYPING MY E-
MAIL ADDRESS PREVIOUSLY

My XP PRO starts up, and the screen remains blank, with
the power light remaining yellow, even though the
computer is on, and the mouse is working (Its red light
is visible) All cables work perfectly. After closing the
computer "manually", with ON/OFF switch , several times,
waiting in between shutoff and turning on, the screen
works again. This has happened several times, but not
every time, and without apparent cause. and is most
frustrating..
Any suggestion as to cause and solution? It does not
appear to be a hardware problem, because when the screen
works, it works well for as long as the computer remains
turned on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

it can't be xp, software is never intermittant! when it fails it fails
permanently!

i would still look for a hardware problem. if this is a separate video card
take it out and put it back in to be sure all the connectors are properly
seated and clean. it could also be a mother board interrupt or bus
controller problem not recognizing the card or initializing it properly.
you don't say what the video card is, that may be important if there is a
known driver problem. when you boot do you see the bios startup screen
before windows boots or is it totally black? what kind of monitor is it,
tube or lcd? can you get the monitor setup to display when windows doesn't?

too many questions left to give real answers.

My guess is a hardware issue, but there's not enough information to be
sure. Do you have another monitor to plug in to that PC as a test?
