XP Pro Running Slow

Ted Leonard

I've just installed Win XP Pro on a Desktop PC with a 1.1
Gig Processor, and I upped the RAM to 640 Meg. My problem
is that every program takes forever to open, and then
runs terribly slow. I have Win XP Home Edition on may
laptop PC, running a slightly slower processor, and less
RAM, and it runs circles around this XP Pro machine. I am
guessing there may be services running on the XP Pro PC
that possible I don't need, and that could be terminated.
If anyone knows of a solution, I would appreciate the
help.

Thanks

Ted

Ted;
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

Ted,

I'm having the same exact problem! If anyone has a
solution, I'm open to ALL suggestions.

Thanks.
