xp pro rebbots for no apperant reason

last night my system shut down for no knowen reason and started a reboot got
past the splash screen then came up with an error message of

winlogin.exe failed click ok to terminate or cancel to debug

clicked ok and system rebooted self agine this time i was able to get it to
go to boot seliction screen and selected safe mode with network support as
im on a lan
system loaded to the safe mode screedn but it was all black with mouse
pointer and safe mode in all 4 of the corners nothing else

rebooted system through reset button this time error message came up as
startup.exe failed click ok to terminate

Im stumped this is my real first xp failer any ideas ???

Try to get back to the Windows XP Startup Menu (boot selection screen)
and this time choose the "last known good configuration" option.

To bring up the Startup Menu try tapping the F8 key rapidly during the
initial stages of the startup (before the opening Windows XP splash
screen appears).
