Windows Boot Problems

I had posted earlier about how I was getting a blue screen 'stop error {Fatal
System Error} Logon Process system process terminated unexpectadly...' This
had happened after running AVG 8.0 in Safe Mode to remove viruses on the PC.
We found no solution so eventually I had to format the drive and reinstall
windows.

So another computer.... and I run AVG 8.0 again in Safe Mode to remove the
viruses. Specifically Win32/PEPatch. I reboot the PC after scan is finished
and it gets to the windows loading prompt and then restarts. It continues to
restart the PC before the login screen even appears. I'm confused, aren't
anti-viruses supposed to help the computer?

Any Ideas?

I'm performed a system restore. In restore install is it supposed to go
through teh 40-50 minute installation of windows after it reboots and setup
continues? Does that mean I am going to lose all my data on the HD?

here is more info
on system restore:

---------------
some anti virals will prevent
system files from being restored
to an earlier date.

there are some anti virus that
install temselves in the mbr to
protect the system, but it also
causes problems with booting
or installing updates.

moreover, if you were able to
successfully zap an infection
from your disk, then there is
a high probability that some
system files were corrupted
by the infection and require
replacement because the anti
virals cannot do this.

perhaps, you should simply
consider uninstalling your anti virus.

then if you have a windows cd you
can then run a "repair" to replace
missing or corrupted system
files with genuine ones from the
cd:

a repair installation will also remove
all your old system restore points and
create a new one after the system
is functional and genuine again.

Thanks for your input. You provided me with some valuable insite.

I'm still unsure of the repair install however. Like I said, I went into
ENTER setup. Then hit R on to repair the c:\windows. It went through the
steps of installation which took about 10 minutes. Then it rebooted and
continued setup after reboot with the installation that normally does a clean
wipe and takes 40-50 minutes. I want to keep all my personal information on
there and don't want a clean wipe. Is it supposed to reboot and continue with
the installation after it repairs the first time?

as long as you hit
the r key and initiated
a repair, then you will
be ok.

------------------------
however, if you select
"install", then it would
overwrite your old installation
with a new one.

when you use the "install"
method, the setup will scan
your disk and then provide
you with a list where you
want the "install" to occur.

in which case you would
have the option to select
the location of the current
o.s. or a new location.

so if you get a menu/list
detailing the drive space
and locations, then you want
to cancel this, since this is
indicative of an installation
of windows and not a "repair"
