XP only boots to safe mode :-(

XP Home Edition
Dell Dimension 5100

Rather frustrated with a problem at the moment.

Dell box about 18 months "old" will not boot fully, but will boot to
safe mode only.

User said that a message had appeared noting a virus and had followed
on screen instructions to remove it and since then it wouldn't start
up fully. (Some application called explorer

Initially it wouldn't boot past the XP splash screen with the
scrolling bar.

Noticed that in safe mode the egg timer remained on at all times -
listing the processes running showed iexplorer continually starting
(memory usage would climb, then start again, climb, start again etc).
Tried to remove iexplorer 7 to no avail at all. Renamed iexplorer.exe
and restarted in safe mode, all looks OK. (no egg timer). Full boot
still sticking at scrolling page.

Tried to install AVG but no joy as in safe mode.

Installed regcleaner standard and cleaned up over 100 green badged
issues. Now full boot progresses to welcome screen - but then
restarts.

Tried to restore to previous restore point... but having selected a
restore point and reached the screen advising that windows will gather
some information then reboot (Confirm Restore Point Selection),
clicking next does nothing - absolutely nothing. No reboot, no
progress.

Trying to now remove iexplorer 7 via control panel - remove programs
now ends up with the system restarting/rebooting itself when I try.

Have booted from XP disk to recovery console and run chkdsk /r - some
errors found and repaired but still will not progress past welcome
screen.

Have checked in control panel - system - advanced - start up and
recovery - settings, and "automatically restart" under system failure
is NOT checked (and hasn;t been). The restarts however never blue
screen.

I am devoid of how to proceed :-(

any ideas?

TIA
