Security problems

I am having some trouble with my PC and have limited knowledge of how to
operate and would be grateful of some help. Last year I received a virus on
my Computer and took it to a local repair shop to be fixed. When I cololected
it they told me they had removed Norton as it was out of date and installed a
programme called AGV. It worked OK for a couple of months, then one day
whilst attempting to get online AVG kept blocking any page I tried to load -
including my email page at yahoo and my University page - and told me I
needed to purchase the full version to be able to surf the net. I went to the
repair shop and they claimed no responsibility and that they would correct
the problem for a fee.
I managed to resolve this issue with a system restore, although the earliest
date I could select was after AVG had been installed.
I have subsequently purchased Windows Live One Care, but when I try to
install it I am told that AVG 8.0 is a conflicting programme and needs
removing first. Windows Live One Care cannot do it, and when I try to remove
it manually I receive a message saying simply 'installation failed'. Does
anybody know the problem I am suffering, and how I can rectify it myself? I
think that if I can get this 'AVG 8.0' removed, I will be OK as I have a 2
year windows Live One Care subscription, but until the said programme is
removed I cannot install WLOC. Please help, but i have no computer training
so keep it simple - I may be looking over the obvious.
Many Thanks.

Try re-installing AVG, then it may un-install the remains first.
