XP Pro - Error creating volume shadow copy

Joe Badham

Like some others, I'm getting the following error message when
attempting a backup, have read all the other related posts I could
find but have not solved the problem and would appreciate any help:

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042316
Aborting Backup.

The event log shows the following:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error
DeviceIoControl(000001FC,0x0053c008,00269670,0,00268668,4096,[0]). hr
= 0x80070057.

It looks like you have two backups going at the same time (or there is
another application that uses VSS at that time). VSS can serve only
one backup at a time. Please make sure that during your backup there
are no other backup apps running.

If your problem cannot be solved in this way then you might want to
contact PSS (see http://support.microsoft.com for more info)

Thanks, Adi

P.S. technical details: 80042316 means "snapshot creation is in
progress".

Thanks, Adi. Since hearing from you, I compared what services and
processes were running on two practically identical computers we have;
I also noted differences on what was included in startup (using
msconfig) on each of the two. I eliminated 3 that were starting up on
the problem computer that were not on the startup of the other. Once
I did that, backup worked fine. Then, one by one, I reintroduced
those 3 items to startup and to my surprise, backup continues to work
fine. I have no idea why, however, I assume that if I find this
problem persists, it involves one of those three programs. And I
further assume that with those programs running and in use, the
problem probably will return. None of the 3 is very important,
certainly none needed at boot-up.
