Error 80042306 when using backup utility on NTFS volume

The error is this (quite common it seems!):

"Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042306
Reverting to non-shadow copy backup mode."

Reading elsewhere it seems this is often with people trying to backup a FAT
file system, but mine is an NTFS volume. Also from readig other posts I know
you are interested in the applications event log. I found this VSS entry.

Otherwise the backup worked with a few files skipped. No other obvious
problems with my system.
