Hi there,
Every time i dial up my password has changed, there is a tick in the
box 'save password' i have tried settings-advanced and entered it
there, i have tried in internet settings but no joy.

I can tell it has changed as it changes to 16 digit password, mine is
only six.

Also when receiving email it asks for a the password,

can anyone help?

Thanks

The number of *s bears no relationship to the length of the password
stored. It always shows maximum *s, to confuse the ungodly. (As 30
seconds with groups.google.com would have demonstrated. This was
asked/answered here as recently as yesterday, iirc).

The password will LOOK like it has changed, but won't
actually change. The dialup password box changes the
length of ALL passwords to 16 characters, so no one will
know how long it is, and make guessing the password next
to impossible.
The password is saved as 6 characters, but looks more (for
security only) if you dial up, you should not get an
invalid password error. The REAL password is saved, just
more secure now.

Thanks for clearing that up, it makes sense.
My ISP (V21) must have been having a spell of poor connectibilty,
leading me to believe settings were incorrect, unfortunate
coincidence.

30 seconds? i appreciate the answer would be there, i looked in the
help file and googled but given the amount of irrelevent shite i had
to sift through i asked here as i assumed that was the purpose of the
group?
No offence intended.

Hi,
Regarding your first question: your password has been saved even though you
are seeing 16 dots. It's a way of ensuring (password masking, they say) that
nobody tries to discover what your password is. Just connect as you would.

No offence taken. 8>. Yep, the 30 seconds assumes you are already on
line and have some experience at framing queries to google .. it's
definitely one of those deals where knowing the right question improves
your chances of getting a useful answer.

I am having a similar problem, and it is preventing normal
connection. Does anyone know if there's an actual solution
to the following problem?

When I set my password in dial-up networking and click
Dial, it is fine. If I disconnect and reconnect via dial-
up networking, it remains fine, and continues to show the
same number of password dots.

I set up Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to
automatically connect to the internet when accessed if I
am not already connected. When either program attempts to
dial, the password pops up as a much longer string of
dots. The new password is an invalid password, and I
cannot connect when using it. Further, it alters the
password in dial-up networking so that it reverts to the
invalid password and will not retain the correct one.

I should also mention that the invalid password has the
same number of dots as my userid, though this may be a red
herring.

Any fixes out there? This thing has me stymied.

Thanks,

Kathleen
