XP Pro crashes after reboot post installation

I've just installed a new OEM version of XP Pro (with SP2) on my computer.
All seems to go ok during the "blue screen" setup phase - I deleted the
existing partition and reformatted the drive, then created a new partition
and it says it copied over the files it needed.

It then reboots and makes it as far as the black XP logo screen with the
scrolling blue bar and freezes after about 20 seconds.

Although I have no idea what to use the recovery console for, my basic
understanding of DOS shows me that it has indeed copied the c:\windows folder
and looks like the right files are there.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've already tried
re-formatting again and reinstalling but same problem...

Thanks
Michael

Was the OEM version PC specific? i.e. an OEM version supplied by, e.g. Dell,
if so it is likely tied to that specific sys.
Is the sys Winxp compliant?
Tried removing any 'extra' hardware then installing?
Does the hd/mobo controller require you to F6 during the installation to
install third party drivers?

Hi DL, thanks for the quick reply...

It was an OEM version bought from an online retailer. I bought it when I got
some more memory to upgrade the machine. It didn't say anything about being
specific for any particular version of PC (I'm using an ASUS Terminator P2 if
that helps).

The hard drive had a version of XP Pro on it before which worked fine, but
did have the odd intermittant problem. As I couldn't trace the authenticity
of the software, I decided to just buy a new copy, format the HD and start
again...

During the setup phase, it gives me the option to install 3rd party drivers,
but happily carries on if I don't press the button.

I've now disabled any ports that my BIOS would let me disable (eg LAN, MIDI,
Game etc) and have turned off advanced power management.

I've disconnected my second DVD drive and removed my wireless network card.

The blue scrolling bar on the black XP logo screen now goes across 3 and a
bit times before freezing. Yesterday it only went across 1 and a bit.

I've run a chkdsk at the commant prompt (using the recovery console) and it
says everything is ok. I can't find any error (setup*.log or otherwise)
files which the support base says will be there if it is a device causing
problems.

Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can resolve this? I know that my
PC will work with XP Pro because it was when it was an illigit copy. Am
confused as to why this new, legal CD of exactly the same version (but
including SP2) now won't work...?

Help please!!

Michael

What happens if you try to boot into Safe Mode? Does that get any
further?

Good luck
