my computer was doing fine - but numerous - reminders to up-grade kept
appearing, so I downloaded&installed xp service pack 2 - computer crashed.so
I tried the recover procedure to restore back to an earlier date where the
computer was running very well - at that point the computer crashed again -
Now, I can attempt to restart - but can only get a totally dark screen or a
screen showing safe mode in all four corners - but the rest of the screen is
blank - I have no control over the computer at that point - Please help - any
suggestions?

Try starting computer to the BIOS,install xp cd,then set to boot to xp cd
(boot
device priority,or similiar),once at menu screen press R for recovery, then
press enter key for password if prompted, then type:CHKDSK C: /R When its
thru, type:EXIT Let xp start-up,remove cd.If at that point it wont,shut-off
comp-
uter,on restart,tap the F8 key,select safe-mode,enter as administrator.
