XP on new hard drive

I've just had to replace a fried hard drive and use an HP recovery disk to
get started on a new HDD. Problem is, the recovery disk dates to 2003 and
when I try to download XP SP2 I get a variety of error messages. Perhaps I
need to download SP1 first?

No, sp2 "includes" sp1 do not download sp2 from windows update instead
download it from here:

Or you can order a sp2 cd from microshaft er microsoft.

Yes run SP1. After that run any other critical updates between
SP1 & SP2. SP2 needs many previous update to work.

Entirely, 100% incorrect, SP2 can be applied directly without wasting time
with your method.

Correct. Service Pack 2 is supplied with Service Pack 1 already merged
within.
