Have been having stability problems with Word and Excel.
When typing words or data, file dropdown window will
engage and must be eliminated to continue (i.e., or wants
me to save the file). Also a new letter of spreadsheet
will appear "magically" and interrupt work sessions. This
is very disruptive and can't type more than one or two
letters at a time. Have checked all files for virus
(Norton). Have reinstalled XP Office Professional and XP
Small Business, both Gateway OEM products. Have installed
all Office service packs. Problem continues. Gateway
suggests reformatting the harddrive...that is my last
option. Suggestions or solutions out there????

Thanks, JimK

I wonder it it could be a minor keyboard problem? Perhaps a fault or dirt
in keyboard around a control or windows key? Do you ever see a similar
problem with other applications like your email program or Notepad?

Do you have access to another keyboard you could try?

"Reformatting the hard drive" sounds way too drastic.

I agree, sounds like a keyboard with a malfunctioning Alt key to me.

Disable the voice recognition. Start/ Control Panel/
Regional and Language Options/ Languages Tab at the top
of the box/ Details button and remove all except the
keyboard option.
