Typing becoming unstable!

I'm not sure if this is a problem of XP or Office but it is driing me nuts.
I am running Windows XP, Home edition with SP2 and MS Office 2003 on a new
Sony Vaio.

When I type, (in either Offce email, web email, word or even this form), the
point where the leters appear changes. Normally, letters typed appear after
each other but I am finding that, every few minutes, the cursor moves and
letters are typed in the wrong place, often a few lines up. Occasionally a
sentence or even a whole paragraph disappears. In typing this plea for help,
the place where the letters appear has jumped several times necessitating
much copying and pasting.
Has anyone come across this phenonema before? What causes it and what can be
done to fix it?

The phenomenon (!) could be caused by malware or a virus. Try booting into
Safe Mode by pressing F8 early during the boot phase, then check if the
problem persists.

The touchpad is vibrating as you type. That causes the sensitive
membrane to see the vibrations as taps, which move the cursor to the new
position. Get a mouse, and disable the touchpad to remedy this.

Do you have your microphone & voice recognition turned on?
I've known that to cause similar problems to yours.
