XP logging in then off straight away

Hi,
My brother in law is having problems with his laptop. He has two user
accounts, his and his wifes but when trying to access these he cannot get
into his desktop to open anything up like ie, media player etc.

He gets to the user account screen and clicks on his or his wifes log on, he
then gets his desktop background showing for 2-3 seconds then it says logging
off, this happens on all logins. I have tried entering in safe mode, going
through last known good config
aswell and all other parts of safe mode area with no luck. Even in safe
mode the same thing happens with the desktop being there for a very short
time then logging off.

Can anyone help and give detailed advice on how to fix this? I have tried
going through his administrator account but he cannot remember the password,
once i can get into his desktop i can scan, defrag etc but i need to get in.
Any help would be fantastic, thanks in advance.

Have a look here - it deals with the same issue:

Hi Pegasus,
Thank you for the reply. I have tried logging in to the
administrator in safe mode but this still logs me off straight away. I now
have another laptop that i have connected to my infected brother in laws
laptop through an RJ45 cable.

Can you give me instructions on how to fix this problem now the 2 systems
are linked?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here is what you can do. Let's assume that Laptop1 is the problem laptop and
that Laptop2 works fine. Let's also assume that you know these details:
- The NetBIOS name or the IP address of Laptop1
- The name of an administrator account on Laptop1
- The password for this account
- Alternatively: The password for the "Administrator" account.
I also assume that Laptop1 runs WinXP Professional.

1. Connect the two PCs with a network cable to the same hub/switch/router.
2. Click Start / Run / cmd {OK} on Laptop2 to open a Command Prompt.
3. Type this command:
ping {Laptop1} and press Enter.
(Replace {Laptop1} with the NetBIOS name or the IP address of Laptop1.
Do not type the curly brackets.)
4. Do not continue unless you receive a response.
5. Type this command:
psexec \\{Laptop1} cmd -u:{AccountName} {Enter}
(Replace {Laptop1} and {AccountName} with actual values)
You can download psexec.exe from www.sysinternals.com.
Enter the password when prompted.
6. Type this command:
set system {Enter}
Report in your reply what you see.

By the way - the link I referred to does not only refer to "Safe Mode" - it
also refers to the Recovery Console.
